How To Get The Most From Your Consulting Services
It is important to hire a consultant with a goal or endpoint in mind. Companies sometimes fail to get the most of their consultants because they have not clearly defined their needs and/or expectations. Consulting services are an added expense. Here are a few suggestions for getting the most out of your consultants: 1. Define the service or project the consultant is hired to perform. Be as specific as possible to capture details. 2. Set realistic timelines for completion of various stages of the work. 3. Periodically check to see if timelines are being met and if not, why. Perhaps the progression of the consultants’ work is dependant on someone else’s work being completed first. 4. Make sure the consultant has the resources to perform their job. Do they need access to a computer, printer, can they review necessary SOPs or be able to move freely (as needed) with in the organization. 5. When possible, prepare with any needed resources prior to the arrival of the consultant. It is better to have the consultant, “hit the ground running,” instead of sitting around waiting for you to assemble necessary people or supplies. 6. When appropriate, ensure that your staff is aware of the consultant’s purpose and role. Your goal as well as the consultant’s is successful completion of work that exceeds your expectations.
